What DMX is and how it works

The background worth having before you plug anything in.

What is DMX?

DMX stands for Digital Multiplex, a communication protocol for controlling stage and event lighting. It was developed in the 1980s to give lighting equipment one universal way to talk. Before DMX, every brand had its own system and connecting different lights meant adapters and custom wiring.

DMX512, the common version, is now used worldwide for lights, fog machines, lasers, moving heads and LED fixtures. Control data travels from a console or software to your fixtures over ordinary XLR cables. Decades on, it is still the backbone of modern lighting.

The 512 is the number of channels in one DMX universe. Each channel controls one function of a fixture - brightness, a colour, pan or tilt. Concert venue, theatre, nightclub or a party in the garden: if lights need to be synchronised, DMX is how it is done.

How does DMX work?

A controller - hardware or software - sends instructions down a daisy-chained cable run, 44 times a second, to every connected fixture. The controller is the brain; the fixtures just listen.

Each fixture gets a start address: the channel where it begins listening. A light using six channels with a start address of 1 responds to channels 1 to 6. The next light might start at 7. That is how one controller drives many fixtures, each doing something different at the same time.

Addressing: where each fixture starts listening

Signals run over 3-pin or 5-pin XLR cable, with everything connected in a line: controller to light 1, light 1 to light 2, and on down the chain. The last device should carry a DMX terminator - usually a 120-ohm resistor - to stop signal reflections that show up as flicker and glitches.

Data flows one way, controller to fixtures, over 3- or 5-pin XLR. The last device in the line gets a terminator.

DMX is one-way: data only flows from controller to fixtures. Simple, reliable, fast. A single universe of 512 channels covers dozens of fixtures; bigger shows use several universes, over Art-Net or sACN on ordinary ethernet.

Every channel carries a value from 0 to 255. That range is intensity (0 off, 255 full), colour mixing, strobe speed, or motor position in a moving fixture.

Industry-standard consoles

The most powerful DMX systems come from companies like MA Lighting (the grandMA series), Avolites and Chamsys. They run large productions, concerts and theatres worldwide, with touchscreen interfaces and deep programming tools.

They are excellent for complex shows - and expensive, and they take training. If what you want is straightforward control of your own rig from a Windows PC, that is the gap SDC fills.

Hardware controller or software?

Both send the same DMX signals to your fixtures. How you work with them is what differs.

Hardware controller

A physical desk with sliders, buttons and sometimes a touchscreen, wired straight to your lights over XLR. No computer needed. Popular live, where reliability and instant access matter most.

Software controller

Runs on your computer and reaches your lights through a USB-to-DMX interface or an Art-Net device. You get a visual workspace for scenes and effects, at lower cost and with more flexibility.

Which should you choose?

In a high-pressure live environment where speed and simplicity decide everything, a hardware desk may still be the better tool. If you are programming a show in advance, running a fixed installation, or want creative control without the price tag, software makes more sense.
